Crémant D'Alsace, Domaine Regin

Crémant is one of France's better-kept sparkling secrets. It is made exactly as Champagne is, with a second fermentation in the bottle, but in other regions and at a fraction of the price. Alsace is the biggest crémant producer of them all.

This one from Domaine Régin is a Blanc de Noirs: a white wine made from black grapes, in this case Pinot Noir. The vines grow on loess soils, and the wine spends at least nine months on its lees in bottle. The result is pale, fresh and gently fruity, with white pear, a faint floral note and a fine, persistent mousse. It makes a very good aperitif and is more versatile than its price suggests.
