Henry McKenna was born in Draperstown, County Derry, Northern Ireland in 1819 and immigrated to Kentucky in 1838. He gained experience in an Irish distillery and later worked in a liquor store for a relative. Despite the difficult economic times in Ireland, he was determined to find success in America and chose Kentucky as his destination. After moving to Lexington, he met and married Elizabeth "Lizzie" McGuigan, who was also from County Derry. The couple settled in Nelson County, where Henry worked on road crews as many immigrants did. Despite these humble beginnings, Henry eventually became a highly esteemed figure in the Kentucky whiskey industry.

According to Henry McKenna, a renowned bourbon expert, he maintained strict sanitation practices by scrubbing his fermenting tubs with soap and sterilizing them with boiling water before reuse, rather than simply whitewashing with lime. This ensured that "wild" yeasts would not contaminate his new batch. In addition, he was credited by the Louisville Courier as being one of the few Kentucky distillers to age his whiskey for a minimum of five years before selling.

In 1892, a bill was introduced in Congress that would require bourbon whiskey to be aged for five years. This bill became known as "The McKenna Bill," although it did not pass that year. Just under a year later, at the age of 75, Henry McKenna passed away and was laid to rest in Saint Michael
