JABLE DE TAO · LANZAROTE White Wine

A mere 100 miles from the Sahara coast, it is these unique attributes that make Lanzarote a fascinating grape-growing region.

This Jable De Tao white from the eponymous winery of Jable De Tao has hints of lemony cream on the nose followed by limes and green apples. On the palate, it is textured and creamy with hints of lemon rind and a long, saline, mineral finish.

Grapes: (Malvasía Volcanica, Listán Blanco, Listán Negro and Diego)
Carmelo Peña Santana, founder of Bien de Altura in Gran Canaria, is also the main man behind Jable de Tao, a new project set up in 2022 in Lanzarote. It is one of the oldest islands of the Canaries archipelago, formed around 15 million years ago,

Jable de Tao’s vines are planted on their own roots, also called “pie franco” in Spanish, and are 50 - 200 years old.

These factors produce low-yielding fruit with extraordinary concentration. Founder Carmelo exclusively farms native varieties such as Listán Blanco, Malvasía Volcánica and Diego, which are often vinified together as field blends. Very importantly, the vines
are grown on a mix of soils: some have a volcanic origin with finer textures locally known as “rofe” and other are sedimentary with a significant sandy marine component, aka, “jable”. This not only explains the name of the project, but also the dazzling mineral profile and marked saline finish that all the wines possess. These are precise, taut, laser-cut whites, with stony cores and remarkably bright character and tension.

The 2022s are the first ever vintage from Jable de Tao, and we are delighted to get our hands on these bottles.

Jable de Tao is Carmelo’s expression of the Lanzarote island. A field blend of four native varieties (Malvasía Volcanica, Listán Blanco, Listán Negro and Diego) from a variety of soils and aspects. Carmelo’s intention is to bottle the nuanced terroirs of Lanzarote under a unique wine. The wine is direct pressed into barrel, concrete tanks and foudres where it ferments and ages.

Tasting: hints of lemony cream on the nose followed by limes and green apples. On the palate, it is textured and creamy with hints of lemon rind and a long, saline, mineral finish.
