Malbec was an important Bordeaux grape long before Argentina made it famous, and a few growers still look after old vines. Vignobles Bourceau, family-run at Berson in the Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux since 1835, makes this from vines more than 50 years old on clay-limestone.
It is aged for ten months in concrete rather than oak, which gives the fruit a direct, unvarnished purity. Deep purple, with violet, blackberry and tobacco and velvety tannins, it is lighter and fresher than a typical Argentine Malbec: elegant rather than brawny. Drink by 2029.
